All About Silver Spring

Silver Spring is an unincorporated area adjacent to the northern border of Washington, D.C. in Montgomery County, MD. Silver Spring’s ‘downtown’ area is an urbanized and energetic business, retail, entertainment and residential center which is experiencing a significant – and impressive – renaissance! In addition to the downtown area, residents of a huge swath of eastern Montgomery County have Silver Spring mailing addresses, extending from D.C. to the south, Prince George’s County to the east, Howard County to the north and Rock Creek Park and Plyers Mill Road to the north and northwest. These boundaries make Silver Spring larger in area than any city in Maryland other than Baltimore and host to a population of over 200,000.

Silver Spring’s ideal location provides easy access to all three local airports and boasts excellent mass transit service from Metro (subway), Amtrak, MARC commuter rail and Ride-On and Metro buses. This central location also provides quick access to Baltimore, Annapolis, Northern Virginia and I-95 to points north and south.

The downtown area is home to over 150 restaurants, the American Film Institute (AFI) housed in the historic Silver Theatre, a 5,000 seat movie complex, and a variety of office, shopping and hotel facilities. Dozens of media companies, including Discovery Communications, call Silver Spring home and the area is fast becoming the Metro area’s new hub for the media industry. It is also home for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and, nearby in the White Oak area, the Food and Drug Administration is consolidating its headquarters which, when complete, will be home to nearly 8,000 employees.

Whatever your preferences or requirements may be in housing, Silver Spring has neighborhoods to meet your needs. From urban condos and townhomes, to beautiful established neighborhoods with tree-lined streets, to mature neighborhoods offering generous lots and amenities like community pools to dramatic new homes and neighborhoods new to the scene, there is truly a neighborhood and a home for everyone! Combining excellent public and private schools, terrific public transportation and wonderful parks and recreational areas, Silver Spring offers a unique combination of winning features sure to meet your needs!
